Have you ever had a strange coincidence?
What's the most insane coincidence you've ever experienced?
We know the odds of winning the lottery are ridiculous, but surely we've all seen some shit happen that is way beyond believable.
Like that time I threw my keys up to someone in a window above me and had one key stick perfectly into a tiny hole in the wall surface. If I had tried to repeat those results, I'm sure it'd be impossible. So instead of becoming a millionaire, I used my one in a billion shot on uselessly suspending my keys in mid-air. What have you wasted your lottery-winning odds on? What’s the most amazing coincidence that has ever happened to you? What’s the weirdest coincidence you’ve ever experienced? Mine is pretty weird.
When I was around 8 years old I went to an adventure/theme park based in the UK. While playing in a castle themed wood-chip play area I climbed up one of the towers by ladder into the small room. There were around 10 or 12 of these towers around the play area. When I entered my head into the small room I was met with the sight of a huge shit in the corner covered in flies and a pair of blue socks covered on shit also. Disgusting and weird but yeah, these things happen.
When I was 15 I moved to another city on the other side of the country and became best friends with a kid on my street. We’re still best friends now 16 years later.
One day we were talking and the theme park came up to which my friend told me he did a shit in one of the rooms in the castle play area when he was 8 and that he wiped his arse with his socks. I was astonished and asked him particularly which tower and what colour were the socks. He said they were blue and described the same tower.
So I saw my future best friends shit 7 years before I moved across the country and met him. Weird right? I was talking with a friend in Los Angeles about matters mystical. She has always been something of a spiritual surfer, whereas I have always been an ultra-rationalist who nonetheless has a cognitive soft spot for ambiguity and mystery. I told my friend a story that has haunted me for years:
While traveling in South Africa right before the onset of the Covid lockdown in 2020 I woke up at seven in the morning in a hotel in Stellenbosch and thought to myself that I owed a good friend in LA who had been battling with cancer for over a year a call. There had been radio silence from him in recent months – which I took as a sign that he wanted to be left alone… and I respected that.
Anyway on this morning in late February 2020 I woke up and thought: ‘I must write Jon [not his real name] now and see where he is in the vast terrible fight.
I sent the email. A week later I got an email from Jon’s wife, telling me that Jon had died on the same day, at the exact same moment that I had sent my email to him. Right down to the minute.
Was there some sort of cosmic symmetry at work here? Was this merely extraordinary happenstance? How should this synchronistic event be interpreted? My friend with the mystical bent just smiled and said: “Embrace the mystery…” which was a very Angelino thing to say… but one which I fundamentally
agreed with.
