125 years ago everyone owned a horse and only the rich had cars.

"Everyone" did not own horses.
Most people in 1901 travelled on foot or public transport - whether that was horse-drawn or mechanical.
Horses were owned by farms, goods carters and coach companies, the livery-stables in 19C America, and in huge numbers by armies; but those animals were all business "equipment" not personal possessions.
You had to be quite wealthy to own a horse as personal transport; along with the tack, stable and if possible, pasture.
Also a horse can normally carry only one person, you need somewhere to keep it, you have it re-shoed at intervals, you have to feed it every day even if you don't ride it. Those add to the cost, and always did.

Nor does "everyone" own a car nowadays. That is becoming ever more expensive and there seems an increasing number of urban residents who could afford a car but can lead their lives easily enough without one.
We won't, thank goodness, go back to using horses; but I do foresee private car ownership reverting to the preserve of the well-off.
