What is thanksgiving?

Apologies for the question as a few users may find this a silly question. I do not belong to that part of the world hence unaware of this event.

A tradition in the United States for giving thanks for everything over the past year.

It is sometimes accompanied with saying exactly what you have been thankful for.

It started among the pilgrims and native Americans for the bounty they had recieved and celebrated currently by the whole country as a national holiday.

Must state it never was intended to either be religious nor as a means to further business profits until many decades later after WWII.
@DeWayfarer Abraham Lincoln made it a national holiday during his term in office.
