See I will not own a cellphone. I hate the idea someone thinking they can reach me 24/7.

Thats what my answering machine is for. So I can screen who is calling before I pick it up.

My house still has a rotary dial telephone still hooked up.

That phone is 60 years old and still works like its brand-new.

Let's see a cellphone last that damn long and still be working

Damn, I just gave away my age. Everyone now knows I'm over 50 yrs old
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@HumanEarth How much does it cost to keep a home phone?
zonavar68 · 51-55, M
@HumanEarth I can't get a landline phone here anymore so mobile is the only option.
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
@Queendragonfly 42.50 without long distance, but I never call long distant unless its a 1800 number
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@zonavar68 I think it's the same situation for me. We have the old contacts left in the walls but no way they will draw a cable for home phone
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@HumanEarth I pay $10 each month for internet and free calls on my smart phone as long as it's not outside calls.

I'd be ruined to have a home phone 💀
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@HumanEarth Also. Everyone who knows me knows I'm not the type of person to always be available on my phone. I either leave it at home or I have it muted, just showing you that you can still be independent even with a better price of phone arrangement.
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
@zonavar68 You want to know why they forced you to use cellphones. So they can track you easier.

People don't want microchips, but they want a cellphone
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@HumanEarth They can see whenever you call someone and who and they can track them down. If you really wanna be safe, bottled messages is the way.
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
@Queendragonfly Yeah, but a home telephone is not portable and they have no idea where I am at when I am on the road
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@HumanEarth I don't know where you need to hide that you're going, but they can check my data out, they will be gradually dissapointed over how boring I am. 😂
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@HumanEarth My thoughts exactly. But you are definitely fortunate to be able to do away with mobile technology in this day and age.
helenS · 36-40, F
@HumanEarth That thing is nice and all, as it hangs from your wall, but can you play Tetris on it?
pdockal · 56-60, M
@HumanEarth

The cell phone will work until the network changes and that's how they sell more phones
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
@helenS Why would you need a telephone to play games on? What a waste of time.

If I want to waste time. I'll just turn on my modem and dial-up an internet connection.

I just have to remember to wax the modem for faster internet speeds. I can reach speeds of 56K
Elessar · 26-30, M
@helenS Can it run Crysis? 😌
helenS · 36-40, F
@HumanEarth That green oversized thing which hangs from your wall is as useful as flint and tinder.
I see my iPhone as a micro-computer, with many functionalities, one of which happens to be, amongst many other things, a telephone. It's my alarm clock, my timer, my radio, my music player, my email client, my messages client, my world map, ... ok I could continue in all eternity.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Elessar I don't even know what that is 😑

@Elessar Got it! Thank you! 👍🏽
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@helenS You're correct until you mention iPhone. A very over priced phone with worse qualities than an android.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Queendragonfly I see my iPhone as an extension of my Mac. For example, any message I get on my phone is mirrored on the Mac. So, I can write SMS messages on the Mac.
Regarding the price of Apple commodities, you must take into account that the hardware is really excellent. I bought my last "Macbook Air" in 2011, and its HD died in 2022 – that's eleven years, and until 2020, it run on the most recent system software! The price was about $1000 or so. I don't think that's too expensive.
And the Mac is essentially a Unix machine with a decent GUI. I spend 90% of my time in a terminal emulator app which is connected to my servers via ssh/sftp. It works really nicely. Basically a Mac is a Linux machine that can print 😏
I'm not an Apple fan girl, just a satisfied customer.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@HumanEarth Is your car 60 years old too? Because they can track you that way too, most cars newer than 2010 have built in GPS...
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
@spjennifer My newest car is a 1990 Chevy station wagon(I just rebuilt the engine), my oldest is 1968 Chevy pick-up
