Anyone know of a good brand to buy a 12 Gauge?

I don't know a whole lot about guns in general, especially when it comes to specs, quality and brands. I do know a 12 gauge is the more typical option for security purposes and home defense, so that's where I'm starting. I'm just a little apprehensive to go buy a random shotgun because I'm looking for something reliable. Hopefully, y'all can give me some pointers. Thank you!

You don't need a 12 gauge for home defense. A 20 gauge is less expensive, much easier to handle, and just as effective.

@RogueLoner Thank you! I'm trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can.:)
TexChik · F
@RogueLoner they handle exactly the same , price is the same

@TexChik Either way, a 20 gauge from what I read, is the second largest. 12 being the first. If either of those can stop a threat, and they can, still really good to have in the arsenal.:)

Here's all the knowledge you need. lol. Challenge any self proclaimed gun 'expert' to a duel. They have their $1500 12 ga and you have a $300 20 ga. Ask them for the first shot and see what they say. 🤣
TexChik · F
@RogueLoner you can have a $1500 20 gavand a$100 12ga . The same model of the same gun side by side in different gauges costs the same these days

@RogueLoner lmao hopefully anyone that I have to pull a shotgun on, won't be armed and I can start to de-escalate the situation.

@ArmyOfOne I don't profess to be an internet gun expert. Guns are not my life and I have better things to do. But I DO know that if I were faced with an intruder, and shoot him with a 20 gauge, I may not blow him in half, but he will be stopped. Blowing someone into two pieces is messy. 😖
ArmyOfOne · F
@RogueLoner Hahaha yeah that's true! Maybe a 12 is overkill. I just want to be safe.:)
TexChik · F
@ArmyOfOne actually no , 16 ga is now rare but we have one . The shells are purple
ArmyOfOne · F
@TexChik Wow. I didn't know that existed. 😳
TexChik · F
@ArmyOfOne yes there is also a 28 gauge , also pretty rare
ArmyOfOne · F
@TexChik And at this moment, I realized I live in Texas...I can own the whole assortment. Hahahaha that's badass though, so what would have enough stopping power to fend off a bigcat
TexChik · F
@ArmyOfOne mountain Lion ! 12 or 20 , slug guns . Rarely is one f them going to stay in range of bird or buck shot for long
ArmyOfOne · F
@ArmyOfOne Not that I think I'll run into a mountain lion, they're kinda rare to find...but I know first hand they're out there wailing like the Housewives of some ghetto city. Hahaha I'm more likely to find bobcats or coyotes, but I'm kinda curious too on the power behind it.

@TexChik oh boy, what rifles do you use?
TexChik · F
@ArmyOfOne for a cat ? .223 , .270 WSM, .308

That’s what we have shot them with before. The date lion hunter uses a.300 mag

@ArmyOfOne I have a 12, a 16, and a 20. The 12 is a State Police riot gun that my grandfather had. It holds 8 rounds. His brother was a PA. State Trooper. The 20 gauge is the one I have loaded and handy.

@TexChik I've got two, a single shot H&R and a Winchester automatic, both pawn shop finds. I love them but the ammo is getting a bit hard to find here.

BTW, not all 16 shells are purple.
TexChik · F
@robb65 What other color are they? I have only seen purple.
I just looked , every color of the rainbow seemingly. I guess daddy liked the purple brand. He had a Remington Sportsman model 48 semi auto with the engraved receiver (upland bird hunting scene) . He shot a lot of quail and pheasants and varmints with it. I have it now.

@TexChik Red is common. On my desk I have a 16g #1B that is red, I've also got some #1B that is green, some #6 that's red, some #8 that's red, and some #7 1/2 that's purple.
The green #1B was Remington, The red #1B is Winchester, The purple #7 1/2 was Federal, I think everything else was Winchester.

One box of that Winchester was 20+ years old and a slightly different shade of red than the newer shells.
