Anyone know of a good brand to buy a 12 Gauge?

I don't know a whole lot about guns in general, especially when it comes to specs, quality and brands. I do know a 12 gauge is the more typical option for security purposes and home defense, so that's where I'm starting. I'm just a little apprehensive to go buy a random shotgun because I'm looking for something reliable. Hopefully, y'all can give me some pointers. Thank you!

@MissTaken It depends on perspective and situational awareness. The area I live in is relatively safe compared to living in the city. However, I'm not taking any chances between animals and people trespassing on my property. I am also taking precautions by having cameras and the like around the farm, so it's not like I'm out to harm anyone. I rather have a 12 gauge as the LAST RESORT, than to not have one when I need it most. I had a scary thing happen last night that threatened my livelihood and my wife. I don't want to be caught with my pants down, metaphorically speaking when something like that happens again.

@MissTaken People own guns to target shoot and hunt as well, but if you haven't been paying attention.. there are no "safe places" in this world. Better to be prepared, at least to some extent.
