Why does sugar taste so strong?

I went sugar free for 2 weeks and today I bought coffee with 2 sugars 2 cream.... and it was sickenly sweet before it wasn't when I regularly had sugar in the past

I have type two but I miss sugar that I “budget” it in my diet. I have to treat it like poison at times because it can be so “addictive” of a taste.
