When did folks stop learning useful things?

One example I have:

One of the guys at work about 28 years can't change his tire in case of flat, or jump-start his car and not just him. Like people in general seem to stop learning new useful things.

Like my family we change tires off rims with crow bars and hammers, rebuild anything, fix anything, make almost anything need (within reason - don't be a wise ass and say did you make the circuit board in the computer)

I don't know maybe we were raised different and believe in living with "If you can do yourself - do it" attitude

After addiction to Social Media.
Not everyone defines "useful things" in the same way. In generations past, my family believed that an accomplished woman could cook, sew and play a musical instrument. These were considered useful things for a woman to know.

From my parents’ generation to the present, "useful things" stopped being gender-specific.

I noticed at some point older generations stopped teaching. With my parents (boomers) it was always handing me something and telling me to figure it out, and they'd help in a belittling way. But for maybe ten years I've noticed there's no patience for people learning. I don't even get trained at jobs anymore. They just put you to work and belittle you when you get things wrong, act annoyed when you have questions.

I've taught myself a lot. I'm self-sufficient for the most part but these days it's like pulling teeth to get someone to help you understand.

No one taught most of us older folks, it was "There the problem - now how are you going to fix it yourself" I was was taught by doing out of need and forced to learn it or suffer.

My family made sure we grew up knowing that we had to rely on ourselves and not no one else and that included the government.

I think a lot of it, is people these days don't care about learning to be self sufficient.

It's amazing the lack of interest in how things work plague the generations behind us. Just pay someone else to fix it. Entitled until broke then whine about it. Or cry for someone else to take care of them and their things. One day we won't have fixers

@HumanEarth There's a difference in not being able to do things, me also, and having no idea how to do them.

we can teach, put only if they listen

@HumanEarth There's the old battle of getting them to enjoy their youth while they have it. And convincing them that we were indeed once their age and no believe it or not they don't know everything.

Social media has dumb down our society.
Its not just when it comes to learning.
It has also affected our society socially, mentally, and spiritually.
The story is too long for me to post here. ☺

I think we stopped learning useful things when our culture suddenly discovered that if it changed it's gender identity to avoid learning useful things, that someone would come along and change a flat tire for them.
