@Queendragonfly This veterinarian's parents died while he was taking his final exams. He had a mental breakdown because of it and ended up walking all day out of town. He saw a train getting ready to pull out so he decided hoping on it and going where ever it was going and the train turned out to be a circus train.
It goes back and forth between when he hoped on the train when he was aboard 18-19 to the present where he's in a nursing home at about I think 90 something and he's losing his memory but he keeps fading back into the time he worked for the circus.
It is very rated R but in a good way.

@Queendragonfly It is actually really good and I'm sure they are going to make it into a movie if they haven't already. I'm not sure when the book came out, but an old gf said she was reading it around 2020.
