Should I pay this guy more money?

I posted an ad on Nextdoor app, asking for someone to cut down some bushes/ trees ( I don’t know what they are called) that were growing up against my fence, touching the power lines in my next door neighbor’s yard.
A guy answered and said he would cut down for $100, and haul off branches, but for $175 he would cut all the branches around my fence. I asked for his CashApp and when he came out, I showed him where I wanted him to cut. For $100
So I went to work while he was cutting the trees down and he messaged me and said he was almost finished and asked me to go ahead and send the money and he would finish the next day because it was raining and about to storm. So I sent him $100 by CashApp.
The next day I was at work and he texted me and said to send him the rest of the money! I was confused because I had said I could pay $100 and showed him the section I wanted cut, but he took it upon himself to cut all the trees against the whole fence that he said he would do for $175 which was not what I wanted done because I didn’t have that much to spend!
On top of that, he left a ton of heavy branches in my yard that I can’t lift by myself and now no one can mow around them!
I texted him and said it was a misunderstanding and that I just wanted the small section that was touching the power lines cut- not my entire yard.
I told him that I would pay him the rest of the money from the $75 in installments, and I sent him $ 20, and plan on sending a little each week till I pay it off.
Not only did he not answer me back, he still hasn’t come back and hauled off all the branches in my backyard and it’s a huge mess. And on top of that, all of a sudden I am getting TONS of spam emails in the email address I used for CashApp. Not saying he’s responsible, but the spam started coming that same day.
Would you pay him the rest of the $75, since it was a misunderstanding and he didn’t haul off the branches?

Withhold the rest until you have the full amount and offer it to him saying he can have it when he comes to clear the branches. Wait until he has them loaded before you pay if I were him I'd want to see the cash before loading. It might be worth telling him of your plan if he disagrees he doesn't get the money.
This to me seems fair to both of you.

@GeniUs good idea!

So he didn't come back to finish what he said was incomplete bc of the rain but wants full payment? I wouldn't pay

Yeah this seems to be a big misunderstanding. The trees etc to be cut should've been tied with ribbon or something, just as the city does it so there's no excuses over what should and shouldn't be cut down.

Every detail should've been in writing too, nothing just soley verbal

@deadgerbil I’ve definitely learned my lesson

@Mardrae expensive lesson too, esp as you're probably going to need someone else to clean up your property now. Hopefully someone does it without expecting money

lady, back in my day we would just toss a street kid $15 to do it. trust me, I know. I was one of those street kids
Mardrae · F
@Jeremi kids are smart and greedy these days and they know all about what work is worth,?especially in this heat.

@Mardrae
tell that to my daughter. she'll work for whatever Dad will give her.

The moral of the story is that it's not worth paying any money until you've seen for yourself that the job's been completed satisfactorily.

@jshm2 but he didn’t haul off the branches or finish the work. And nothing in writing, only verbal

I wouldn’t pay him any more until the heavy limbs are removed from your premises.
Mardrae · F
@Ambroseguy80 and it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen since he refuses to answer my texts
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
@Mardrae all the more reason to withhold - he’s unprofessional
