I’m not a sit in my car after work kind of person. I’m that eager to get home, wash the day off of me, get some grub, and nestle into my safe place.

But holy hell, did I get into my car after finishing three separate shifts over this holiday weekend and just sit there with the AC blasting away as my head fell back on the headrest and I couldn’t help but close my eyes for a few minutes. The need to decompress was that real.

Experiencing the verbal battles amongst my coworkers. The moments of everyone being burnt out as hours were still left to be endured in the shift and demands kept coming loudly. The multiple “I gotta step away,” “I can’t do this,” and the singular “…has anyone ever walked out before?” being directed at me, constantly threatening the fortitude of the shield I needed to make it through the whole thing.

I certainly don’t have to be the person who keeps things running when others can’t, but I apparently designated myself to be that person along the way and being that person took a tremendous toll on me night after long night. I honestly don’t know how I did it on so few calories and caffeine, but I somehow did.

I will admit that there was one moment within the three days of amped up chaos when I was left by myself to do too much, and as a result I felt so overwhelmed that the only thing I wanted to do was shut down…and honestly I did a little. I had to slow the internal mechanism down just to preserve my sanity and loyalty to my job while both my bosses retreated for the same reasons. But the difference is I stayed. I pushed through, carried on, and did so with an attitude that didn’t show weakness externally knowing how it could affect the staff I needed to believe that we could actually do this. The whole thing was utterly stupid and my resentment for the bosses not being better prepared on so many fronts killed my respect for them a little in the moment. But we all do the best we can with what we have, whether it’s the time we have allowed to us to complete tasks or the assumptions based on past information of what a situation will be like…even though no two outcomes are the same. Maybe I’m the only one who knows that.

Rant over though. Our last holiday is behind us and so is the busiest time of the year. Our weekends only schedule will be up there, but nowhere near that level of stressful. …I feel the need to knock on wood given how this whole season has rewritten the entire book of “WTAF Was That?”

A shorter work week for the teens means a longer week for the two of us managers though as we will be going in to clean, organize, and prep while the open sign is turned off. And while my days off have gone from two days a week to one, not having the noise and pressure that comes with that flashing open sign will be beyond words glorious.

There will be music.
There will be caffeine.
There will be ponytails waving.
There will be breaks taken whenever they’re wanted.
There will be no teenager undereducated on the importance of personal space saying my name upwards of 30 times in one shift just to ask me a redundant question.

…I’m kinda jazzed for this leg of the wind down. It’s rather awful it feels like a reward to me though. It’s simply because the level of bullshit this season has brought has been that astronomical and unnecessary, and that’s not confined to the work setting itself. But one day at a time, man. And within that day I will present my best…well, okayest self rich in sarcasm, scraps of motivation, and a vast vocabulary of profanities.

Good times. …good times 👍🏻

Well done, soldier. Enjoy the coming peace.
Enjoy the down time. I don't miss having that kind of job anymore. People are demanding, man

How long until the end of the season?

@TransientTinkerer Five more weeks.

As I recall, you were promising yourself that you weren't going to let this job beat up on you the way it has in the past.

@ineedadrink And I’m not. Just have to wear more armor there this year and when I remove it the fatigue is real. I care way less than I have in the past, but I have to because there’s that much more put on me now. Finding the balance takes time.
