What's really funny about your post is that none of those 6 countries on her list includes Canada, which is within walking distance of the USA! 🤣
I was reading where it is extremely difficult to immigrate to Canada, particularly if you've ever been charged with a felony in your home country.
In Canada for example, being charged with a DUI is a felony, whereas a DUI in the USA is only a misdemeanor, even if you kill someone because you were driving while drunk.
If you were charged with a DUI in the USA and then tried to immigrate to Canada, the Canadian Government views your DUI charge in the USA as a felony conviction under Canadian Law Standards and therefore disqualifies one from gaining Landed Immigrant status in Canada.
That is probably why 80% of all American applicants have been turned away by Canada's department of Immigration when Trump won in 2016 and now again in 2024. It is actually easier for an Asian or a Scandinavian to immigrate to Canada than it is for an American.
@SandWitch There is apparantly a rush on websites with emmigration information for Americans globally. But you are correct that the preferred options for most Americans are not an easy get. Technically, the next US Presodent would be refused entry to Australia as a convicted felon. (which is fine with me). All of the viable options would require a good measure of flexibility from the Americans trying to settle there.. As a child, I knew the migrant experience. But the part I was not privy to was the deep disattisfaction my parents had to build for their home nation before cutting ties and leaving forever..As things turned out, it was probably the best decision they ever made, for me.. Certainly one I will be forever grateful for..But I know now the emotional toll it took. But having said all that, each wave of migrants have found it just that little bit harder to carve a niche in a very accepting country.. So I urge anyone considering the idea to do it sooner, rather than later. Its only going to get harder to get out and harder to get in elsewhere. And your children will be the ones to be grateful..😷
@whowasthatmaskedman The only place in the world that Trump could immigrate to as a convicted felon would be Libya. He would not be welcome anywhere in Scandinavian countries and Canada wants no part of him.
I remember reading a piece from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after Trump was elected to POTUS in 2016, where Trudeau characterized Canada's experience of living beside the USA under Trump's leadership as "crawling into bed beside a pink elephant who came home drunk".
That was a very heart-felt response to my post you made and I thank you!
I have always presumed that you were born and raised in Australia which is obviously not the case. Which country did your parents immigrate to Australia from when you were a child?
Ah yes, Cambridge! I've been to the Cambridge and thought it was such a magnificent place to visit. Why would your parents possibly want to leave such a place?
@SandWitch A post war Britain, a strong Class system . Opportunity and a lousy Climate. I was surprised how small, dirty and limited the place seemed to me when I returned later..😷
@whowasthatmaskedman Well, like you said, a great opportunity to find a better life in a better place and so your parent's went for it! I was in Portugal and Costa Rica over the summer and I was shocked to see so many Americans living in both places as Permanent Residents. Over some friendly outdoor cafe chatting, I was soon informed that America The Great really isn't as great as Americans tell everyone that it is, which of course I already knew but I didn't say anything.
@whowasthatmaskedman It actually does! I joined the Royal Swedish Navy at 18 years of age, after being convinced that I'd see the world and broaden my mind from my travels. Where I traveled to was the Arctic Ocean and the North Sea, except where I sat on the boat was in the basement with my feet resting on the steel hull and I didn't even have a port hole window to look out because I was 20 feet below the water line!
@whowasthatmaskedman But they promised me a window seat! That part didn't come to fruition until I left the Navy and joined the corporate world... but I still don't have a window in my little office!
@SandWitch And I used to complain about flying economy..Give me a balcony cabin and i will sit out there all day with a glass of Coke watching the water..😷
