Sad friend duty. In the nineties, I just remembered it.
Friend tells me his relative (cousin) committed suicide. He’s the closest relative to this guy. About four hours away.
He had been down immediately when his mom called. He had hired for a cleanup of the mess and stayed once the police cleared. (There’s companies that do that, very expensive.)
It was a small condo, can’t remember if it was rented or owned. The guy was divorced and he had one son in college with ex. They didn’t want a thing to do with it.
I can’t remember what the guy did. We went through all his stuff. No weird stuff found. Some amount of money, I remember him having me count it after him. We also found a lot of sports memorabilia. And lots of coins, stamps. We started to catalog it, but it was too much.
This was before cell phones, he didn’t want to use the phone for long distance so we went to a 7-11, he called someone, then we went to lunch. Went to another phone and the ex had been contacted, she wanted him to give a the stuff to her son, who was in another state. She also wanted him to settle all the stuff to close down all his stuff. He was like eff that.
We stacked up all the stuff of value and went to Walmart to buy plastic tubs to put it in, then his pickup. We then went through his stuff again looking for a will. Didn’t find one. We left his car there too, we didn’t want to take the car. He knocked on the neighbor’s door, they agreed to take keys to the car and condo. We gave the number of the ex. My friend had bought a disposable camera and took pictures of the property and stuff we took. The neighbor called the police to inform them of the situation. The police didn’t give a eff. So my friend signed a letter detailing the situation. Then let the deceased ex know. We hauled the stuff back to my friend’s house and put it in his garage.
