If you take a razor blade, made a tiny little cut on the back of your hand and then pour lemon juice on it, you will know you are alive.

@DLight Well, think about it, what is life, it is the opposite of death, when you are dead there is nothing, no feeling, not nothing, because your brain is no longer accepting input. It has closed the door to everything and it moves onto whatever is next. When you die, that hurts, the transition is often not a fun experience, so you can safely associate pain with living and death with nothing.
@SoftIceCream "...when you are dead there is nothing" - that was your first mistake here. You don't know that. That's just an assumption.
"...brain is no longer accepting input" - Oh dear oh dear oh dear! Such a simple, and overly-simplistic, take on the matter you have here.
I don't accept the notion that the brain produces consciousness, or our sense of self. Why? Because first of all, there are no good reasons to believe the brain produces consciousness, in spite of all the alleged evidence that some have claimed for the notion, and secondly the materialistic paradigm is currently crumbling due to the inherent inconsistencies and self-contradictions that exist within it.
I believe (yes, this is a belief of mine) that consciousness is modulated via the brain, in much the same way as a television or radio signal from a transmitting station makes it possible for us to see images on a TV screen, or hear the song playing.
In other words, I don't accept your premises. At all. Not even remotely, because to me they make no sense whatsoever.

@DLight With your spiritualistic description of conscience, how do you explain the change in a person that suffers brain damage? If they had consciousness someplace else then a simple nail in the brain, or a stroke, or a brick to the skull should have no effect, but it does.
Our physical brain is all we get, and when it is gone, well, there is nothing left. There is no mysterious place our conscious goes, no spiritual plain or magical mystery tour.
Look at drug addicts, they started out as normal people long ago, before the drugs took over, altering their brains and changing what they do, who they associate with, and everything about their lives going forward. Very few ever recover.
You can fantasize anyway you like, it makes no difference to the facts of life and death. Keep your brain healthy.

This dimension is definitely one of the lower dimensions - closer to Hell than not. It's not base reality either... Somewhat of a simulation.
Look up Quantum Immortality. It's an interesting concept.
I believe that we're all immortal souls, and that it's possible that we have died many times. Not everyone has the same experience of death. I think it's unique to the individual.
And I think the reason why we're here is different for everyone.

@GeistInTheMachine Yes, I'm already familiar with the idea of quantum immortality. It seems to be a much discussed topic at the moment, and I can understand why, because it seems to not only give scientific credence to the idea that we may never die, but it does so in a way that seems to grab you by the throat and shake you and say, "Here! Look at this! If you think you'll ever cease to exist, you're delusional".

I think going into a social site online and posting something, is a reliable sign that you are, in fact, alive.
