Things are tough all over…


As of February 22, 2026, the European Avalanche Warning Services (EAWS) has reported that at least 99 people have died in avalanches across Europe since October 2025, with the vast majority of these fatalities occurring in the Alps. This winter season has been notably deadly, with death tolls in countries such as France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria significantly exceeding historical averages for this point in the season.

I believe last week in Utah there was another 60 deaths. I didn't check as I'm writing this so don't quote.

The simplest explanation in all of these cases is that:
Unfortunate circumstances converged

“Expert overconfidence” -Experience doesn’t reduce death risk.
