This is horrible

It blows me out how people don't know what mother nature does ...and her extremes .

I've watched these trendy ' van builds' and they have no idea how to insulate, or what to insulate with.

Nutrition is a whole science into itself ...im 50 and I still know almost diddly squat .

People have this quaint little flower posy ideal of 'off grid living' ....and it's not easy . And it takes years of prep and hard work .

But still....how did they not , at SO MANY POINTS ! (like starvation, freezing cold) not go ...we need help?

This isn't just stupidity ....it's stubbornness.

Jesus fucking Christ what the hell is wrong with these people. How grotesquely irresponsible.
This is awful. And I’m going to make a wild guess that they liked the idea of off the grid. They were in no way prepared for it. Especially since they were at a campsite and mountainous Colorado where one has to be an expert at living in the wilderness. Off the grid means much more than just going camping. This is such a Sorrowful story their demise must’ve taken much time. At least they were all together.

They didn’t “go off the grid “. They became homeless and died in their tent in the woods .
Very tragic .

While I understand the desire to live softly on the land, you need to ensure that you have sufficient food and shelter to survive. And you need access to medical care should you need it. These people did not plan or execute appropriately, which is very sad. Any time you are in a remote area, you need a contingency plan for survival should things go wrong.

I wonder how long they lived "off-grid" before this happened.

@Vin53 I can't find anything specific. "had been planning to live off the grid since the fall of 2021" and stuff like that. I guess reporters don't have that information or don't consider it as important enough for public to know.

This is a tragic and very poorly planned out thing . Anyone trying to completely live off grid needs to know and have a plan b when an emergency that they can not handle comes up .

It actually takes a village of people with many skills to survive that way, in my opinion.
We may be able to go mostly off grid ( doing away with most electronics and growing our own food, hunting and fishing etc.) but we usually need some help from the grid people.

I read a similar story last night. A young guy went into the Alaskan wilderness and slowly died of starvation.

@SW-User The Teklanika River was too flooded for him to get across, though if he had known about it, there was a winch about a half mile downstream that he could have used. His more serious error was eating a plant he misidentified that prevented him from being able to properly get nutrition from other foods. Once that happened, he was doomed unless he hiked out.
@windinhishair I read about him. A combination of things went wrong. It was a journal of his life and what hapened.

@PoetryNEmotion Jon Krakauer's book Into the Wild was excellent. The movie was worth watching as well.
You can't really live off the grid. People killed the ability of the lands that remain "open" to support human life centuries ago as part of "settling" it. We didn't cancel settlers and colinizers or review what's wrong with them at all because we ain't no woke pussies.

This is heart breaking ..it didn't have to happen ...some people are just incredibly selfish
That’s so tragic…and totally unnecessary. 😞

The grid exists for a reason, people.
