The TPM got reset/corrupted. It's not Windows to blame here, but something happening at firmware/BIOS/drivers level I guess

@SW-User Yes and no, BitLocker relies on the TPM to store the encryption key. The fact the TPM became inaccessible or resetted is the reason why you're asked to input the key manually.

@Elessar What makes you think the TPM became inaccessible? It already booted windows but in recovery mode.
Plus again, it only happened directly after an update. So even if, it’s the update that deleted the keys or changed something about them. Don’t defend microsoft I’m so disappointed in them 😤

@SW-User Oh, a misbehaving TPM will only affect BitLocker (and alikes, like LUKS on Linux if configured to rely on it for storing the keys), not the system as a whole. And I've seen manufacturers make EFI/TPM firmware updates come through the regular Windows Updates interface, so it's very much possible that an update of either these two f*cked it up.
Also keep in mind that BitLocker isn't overly common for final users but it is in enterprise. If there was a bug in it, it'd be all over the place.
It's much more likely that either you have faulty hardware or that the BIOS manufacturer screwed up. Maybe thinking "yeah well, this is a firmware for a non-business machine, no one will give a f*ck if the TPM code isn't properly tested"

Did you put extra security on your laptop that it could lock you out?

@SW-User It's Bitblocker that blocked you out?
Sounds like an annoying program. 😬

@Classified it’s a drive encryption thing that is supposed to protect my data, but not from me

@SW-User It's good you had those keys then 😳

I spent half an hour trying to figure out why VS Code is slow as hell.
Turns out the last nVidia drivers fucked up my framerate.
