I think I choose to be depressed because it's more comfortable. It's been with me for over half of my life. My brain and so many of its neural networks have been forged in the cold fires of depression. I'm not even sure that it can be undone.

Maybe happiness is worth all the effort, but it's such an unfamiliar concept for me that I can't really imagine it. It'd feel like acting out one really long scene in a play. A life of quiet desperation might not be so bad if you grow up to believe that silence is golden. There's a tranquility here that I'm not so sure I can find otherwise.
