Corporal punishment in British state schools, and also in private schools receiving any element of public funding, was banned by parliament in 1987.
It was still practised when I was at school and it was largely a power issue then. There were probably less boys expelled then than there are now.
Curently schools can discipline pupils in other ways or exclude them for a fixed period (suspended) or a permanent period (expelled).
