Its scary that my grandfather is forgetting so many things now. Do you find it scary and alarming too?
So this post will be about my maternal grandpa. Sadly both my paternal grandparents who lived in my hometown Siliguri in West Bengal died so my maternal grandpa who lives in Falakata, a town in Northern part of West Bengal in the Dooars region about 110 km from Siliguri is the only one who is alive now but sadly he started getting dementia since 2024. I remember he was still alright in our 2022 visit to Siliguri and Falakata but suddenly since 2024, he started forgetting things. We went there twice in 2024- first in Jan and then in Sept and I remember while walking around in Falakata roads especially till the bridge, he was often asking me which grade am I in which is crazy because I was a 23 year old MBA student but he was still thinking I was in school. He used to think that me and my parents still live in Siliguri even though we have been living in the city Bangalore in Southern India since 2008. He would often talk about me living in Siliguri even though before 2024, he knew I have been living in Bangalore. Sadly even after saying him multiple times that I was studying MBA and also living in Bangalore, he would still ask which grade am I in and that I live in Siliguri. My grandpa has a habit of joking a lot with me so I used to think at first maybe he was joking but nah those are sadly the effect of dementia. My aunts and all said that he has plenty of times forgotten the way to his home too and got lost.
So we haven't been to Siliguri and Falakata for 2 years as our last visit was in Sept 2024 because my uncle in Siliguri is building a floor in our paternal grandparents home and the construction work is going on forever. I have 4 aunts in my maternal side- one lives in Falakata, another lives in Cooch Behar(another North Bengal small city), another lives in Krishnai in Assam state of India and another lives in Kohima of Nagaland state in North East India as her husband lives there. So yeah my aunts and cousins live in or quite close to Falakata, whereas me and my parents live in Bangalore so very far from them. But my mom has Whatsapp group calls or video calls with my 4 aunts(who are her younger sisters) daily to stay connected despite the distance and jokes around and has laughs. But so far my grandpa was only forgeting minor things but yesterday he wasn't recognizing his own home and kept wanting to go back to his childhood home which is in Mathabhanga, a town in North Bengal too close to the Bangladesh border. Suddenly he is unable to recognize his current home in Falakata and asking my aunt's where is his home and that he wants to go to his Mathabhanga home and doesn't want to live in this current jungle home(yeah there are a lot of trees around the home in Falakata) and even asking my aunts where are their mom(yeah he forgot that my maternal grandma died back in 2008 and he remarried another woman after her death and lives with her who is also lazy and too slow) and kept on saying he wants to go back to his home which isn't really possible now as he left that home decades ago and he is in his late 70s now. Its crazy.
