Car dealerships must think women are stupid

> quoted me $400 for new rear brake pads (said i had to do it now or spend even more on repairs later), inspection showed they were fine
> quoted me $100 to change the engine air filter, I can change it myself for less than $40
> quoted me $1k for a new splash guard, they’re $100 online

Respectfully, what kind of scam are we running here? It makes me feel like I can’t trust them

The brake-pads claim was definitely in the wrong.

The air-filter cost covers $40 for the part plus labour but $60 for that seems very steep. I don't know typical hourly labour charges where you are, or if they use a minimum-order charge, though.

I can't judge the "splash-guard" cost as I don't know if that's what I and the garages round here would call a "wing" or if it's something else, but was what you found on-line from the manufacturer or some cut-price "pattern" copy?

Years ago a friend reached a stage in her career where she could afford a new car, if she didn't go mad.

She plumped for a basic Vauxhall - I forget the model but it was the so-called "entry level". It was also when a radio or a cassette-player was an optional-extra on the cheaper cars.

She recounted to me the conversation went something like this:

Her: "I'd like a cassette-player instead, please".

Dealer (male): "Sorry ma'am. It's not in the list of approved accessories for this model".

Her: "Well, I'd prefer the cassette-player".

This went on for a bit until the dealer sensed he was about to lose the sale.

Amazingly, all of a sudden, it was perfectly possible to fit this "non-approved" accessory in the cubby-hole designed to accommodate either radio or tape-player.

We should go to the dealership together
I’ll bring my masculinity
You bring your superior knowledge of how cars work
@JRVanguard I’m down!

@crownedwithlaurel97 “Sir you only have 3 tires on your car, now I have 1 that’ll match the other ones if you’d like to put it on”
“Oh yeah I’ve heard they do it 4 tire style in Europe… Let me just uhhhhh make sure it won’t be too big of a change for her (points to you) cause you know how women are, amirite”

Dealerships rip you off, period. I’m glad I’m a mechanic 😎
@Cuda6868 I wish I was! Everybody needs a mechanic that they know personally. I wish I knew someone here I could trust

@Degbeme it’s insulting!

@crownedwithlaurel97 Very much so.
GoFish ·
yeah they are terrible
Dealerships are the worst place to get any work done besides warranty
th3r0n · 41-45, M
I would consider them criminals by the time they said you needed $400 brake pads when your brakes weren't even bad and report them to the police as well as the better business bureau
@th3r0n it is that serious lol
th3r0n · 41-45, M
@crownedwithlaurel97 it is if they get the next sucker
Livingwell · 61-69, M
Good for you! Brake pads are about $60 a set. You can change them in an hour if you have the tools. Dealerships just suck the life out of you.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
Ggotta watch out😟
did you het helium in the tyres?.
Ontheroad · M
I'd keep this in mind on those brakes. Yes, 7mm doesn't indicate it is time for new pads, but 3mm from now it will and depending on how you drive, 3mm can wear off before you know it.
@Ontheroad true! Thank you for that. Hopefully in a few months I’ll get to it
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
They think everyone are idiots. I never go there, only to my mechanic. Not even for an oil change.
@uncalled4 that’s smart. Finding a mechanic you can trust is so important!
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@crownedwithlaurel97 It's good for many reasons, one of which is they get to know your car and can help remind you of maintenance.
Sapio · 51-55, M
It's ridiculous what car dealerships charge people for simple repairs.
@Sapio criminal! In this economy. And one of the service guys made me feel bad for not being able to afford $400 for the brake pads up front

@BlueVeins no seriously. Everything is for monetary gain
Kiesel · 56-60, M
The cost to replace the rear brake pads isn’t too bad..
however, in my experience, front pads wear sooner..
Anyway, the filter and splash guard cost quotes they gave, are definitely robbery
No idea what your car is. I've had to replace rotors and calipers because I didn't do pads in time. The squeakers are there to let you know when it's time
@Justafantasy yeah that’sa big fear of mine. But I haven’t heard any squeaking! And there’s 7 mm on the brake pads left. I’m like 🤨
@crownedwithlaurel97 what do they start with? Squeakers wear off and stop making noise as well (ask me why I know this!!)
@Justafantasy 12 mm I think? I’m not certain
RebelRaven · 51-55, F
They have been doing that forever, it’s a complete scam and total bullshit. Good thing you didn’t fall for anything.
