Questioning myself

I’m not the type of person who would go up to someone and start a conversation. I sit on the sidelines and wait for someone else to engage first. I have always been like this. I wonder why? I often wonder if it has anything to do with my childhood. My parents divorced and my mother was in charge and what she said was law. So I never had friends over or went anywhere. You know never did any of the cool things with kids after school. Now thinking about it I was probably raised out of fear that’s probably why when I got my first job I worked as much as I could. Also why I couldn’t wait to get out of my house. But going back to not engaging with people. I sit here in my home after being a widow for 18 years wondering why why why am I going through this life alone. I don’t want to be this way. I want to share my days with someone, enjoy life, go places, share the ups and downs. But I am afraid to engage to make the first move. And I just being stupid! I sit here thinking all this time has gone by and no one has choose me. On one has asked me out or even engaged with me in conversation to see if they would be interested. Makes one wonder is someone wrong with them? Why am I alone? Why don’t I deserve to be loved again? My heart is broken inside because I feel like I will never have another love. Yes, I believe in God and I pray. Yes I know his timing is perfect. However I am human and hurting today and having a hard time. Thanks for listening.

Sorry to hear of your loss. It can be difficult to engage and meet new folks. I too am one that doesn't usually engage in conversation but rather I sit back and listen...waiting for others to engage.

My personal feeling is that you need to find ways to get out and do things you personally enjoy. Maybe joining a club or some other group that actively does things you enjoy. It could be reading a book, bird watching, or hosts of other things. This will help you meet others who enjoy the same things and expand your circle. Plus, for me, seeing someone enjoying themselves brings a positive/attractive vibe that draws me to them. It will be easier to meet and converse with others and hopefully will open doors to more permanent and longer connections.

@WindTherapy these are all good ideas. I was volunteering however that ended due to unexpected circumstances and the personal taking me and my time granted. I live in a small community so there aren’t my places to meet people or go.

@Gigi1425 That's sad someone taking you for granted when you're giving. I live in the country near a small town so I can kind of appreciate how things can be limited. What kinds of things interest you? Maybe sharing a few things may produce ideas from others of ways to meet new people.

The day you moved out of your mother's house is the day that your adult life began.

What you took with you when you left however, was your behavioral traits that helped you to survive while in your mother's house, but were of no relevance to your new life as an adult living outside your mother's house.

What this means is, you are using an old skillset that applied to an old life but which you are still using on a new life, a tactic which simply does not work in the real world.

It's like trying to modify an old analog clock using digital technology to make it work, but because both clocks work inherently differently from each other, the old clock cannot be easily integrated to new technology with any degree of success.

The way you use to think, act and behave around strangers... including your mother, was a self-defense mechanism that you learned through necessity.

That necessity however, was born from your old life in your mom's home, not in your new life in your own home.

Therefore, you are trying to make old survival methods work in circumstances which require no survival from!... something like continuing to wear a parachute when your new life no longer takes you on journeys inside an airplane that you can easily jump from if necessary.

Why then are you still wearing a parachute if you never get into an airplane anymore?

The reason you are not meeting people today is because you are unconsciously 'repelling' people from your space, no different than you did during childhood.

If you didn't want someone to come near you back then, you would put out an 'energy' that told everyone to stay away!... or conversely, if you want someone to come near you today, you must put out the opposite 'energy' and they will approach you as you so desire.

What I'm trying to point out to you is that you're still using the 'repel' mode of your energy gun, not the 'attract' mode... which is why you are not meeting new people who can become a part of your life today.
Gigi1425 · 56-60, F
@swirlie how does one switch the mode so people see the I want to meet you and get know instead of the old repel mode.

First of all, you have to believe in yourself... that you in fact, have the power to influence other people's attention. The truth is, we all do, not just some people.

That said, you have to literally say out loud (or silently to yourself) that you want "that guy over there to come over to me and start talking to me".

Then you put your full concentration on those words and figuratively press 'send' in your mind, as if to telepathically 'send' him that message.

You don't have to be staring at him in hopes that he'll catch your eye, but in fact it would work better if you were not staring at him so that he can assess your approachability from a distance.

As he approaches you, make direct eye contact with him and smile... while maintaining eye contact with him.

As he begins to speak to you about anything, engage with him and don't put him in the awkward position of having to carry the discussion by himself.

Within the first 4 minutes of talking to any stranger, you will know more about them and whether you want to have anything to do with them, than you will for the next 4 hours of conversation.

The first 4 minutes of interaction with anyone will reveal as much about that person as any number of subsequent hours (wasted hours) potentially dating that person.

If the conversation is still vibrant after 4 minutes of chatting, chances are that spending more time together will prove very fruitful as well!

If however, the conversation is dragging or strained by the end of 4 minutes, move on! I'm serious about that. Let him go and work that magic on someone else you see and keep doing it until you strike pay dirt!

People ask me, "Why is someone like you still single?"

Me: "Hang on tight. This is where the magic begins."

DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Very likely it's how you were raised. Yet don't attribute it to just that.

I had all the freedom any kid could want, being a single and very last latchkey kid. Yet I'm still not very social. Please understand that my siblings have kids older than me.

A lot of it has to do with the society itself. You're either acceptable to society or not.

If you're not, you're simply chased away.

Not saying this is the only case either.
I feel for those who are homeless. It's not just how they were raised. There's multiple reasons in why that even happens.

Have you had a conversation with a therapist about your story of origin?
Gigi1425 · 56-60, F
@Northwest I do see a therapist but this particular subject I have not discussed yet. I originally started seeing her so I wouldn’t end up in the same type of relationship as I had with my husband. He was a good man with many demons. I had no self esteem always wonder what was wrong with me, that it was my fault, etc. I have changed and come along way from that woman. Today is just a down day. This a subject I have been thinking about lately and would be worth a discussion with my therapist.
GoFish · 41-45, F
do you think because your mother was overbearing and controlling overlord type you became overly submissive by default? and not independent and free personality wise?
Gigi1425 · 56-60, F
@GoFish yes I often think that and when I try to address any past feelings with her it doesn’t go well.
GoFish · 41-45, F
@Gigi1425 oh she's probably too stubborn and arrogant to recognize how she oppressed you for years

@LamontCranston let us say that things work together.

You are welcome. I hope it helps to vent. So sorry about your loss; was your spouse as young? That really made it worse. I hope you have a support system, friends, family and professional. You shouldn't handle this alone.
Gigi1425 · 56-60, F
@samueltyler2 yes my husband was 44. I had small children to raise
Gigi1425 · 56-60, F
@samueltyler2 yes I do have a therapist generally I am content but today I’m having difficulty
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Gigi1425 maybe you can reach out to your therapist.
