Just back from the former mother in law's funeral.

I knew today would be difficult.
I'd known this woman for 42 years.

The place was difficult to find.
Woodland in the middle of nowhere. Even using GPS.

8 of us. Including her 2 surviving children in all.
It really brought home to me how few some of us have at the end.

The ritual bit over, we collectively went to a quiet restaurant and toasted the departed.
We all sat together and enjoyed a good meal while sharing memories.
It was nice.

Then the drive home. In silence.
I didn't even think to put some music on.

Seemingly endless roadworks; diversions and traffic jams marked the return journey.

And so passes another milestone in life

I offer my condolences.

I've only my cousin still alive from my and our elders' generations.

The number of "D. [year]" entries against names and deleted addresses in my address-book slowly grows.

......

What route? The M6? It was dreadful a week or so ago, and that on a Saturday night!

@ArishMell A47. Absolute mess

@Picklebobble2 My journey should have taken about 7 hours. It took 9. Slowed by bad weather, road-works preparations, a complete closure of the M6 entry, a long delay by an accident or breakdown, another closure and detour... Then another detour only six miles from my destination!
