Originally K12 SUMMER RECESS was to allow children to help their family tend the farm for harvest in Fall.

Actually, those old schools in Victorian cities were too hot in summer, so there was a vacation for everyone.
But it's work only and Americans know their alternative story.
"Father at sea, Mother in the factory, Children now in school,!" That's a Dutch propaganda poster from 1894 translated to English. They were celebrating the total containment of themselves! Yippee. There was absolutely no use for children on farms.

@Roundandroundwego your perspective is very valid. Prior to the "American revolution" it was the "British Colonies". But prior to the revolution is what i was refering to. Therefore colonial farmers was to what i was refering and farmers are family owned and operated. Everyone participates
