I think becoming such a wealthy, powerful, influential nation gave us a sense of impunity and shamelessness. So we feel like we can do no wrong and that we’re always on the “right side of history”. Being on the winning side of WWII and the Cold War bolstered that. But that’s just arrogance. It’s made us blind to our failures and injustices. When the whole rest of the world is saying there’s a genocide in Gaza, our response is “then the whole rest of the world is wrong!” but what’s more likely to be true?
