Don't you save everything in a cloud account? The last time I changed phones, I had to do almost nothing.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 Not what I need. Cloud has nothing to do with accounts. I have everything data wise on SD cards.
I actually do backups.

@sarabee1995 You were lucky! I changed my phone a couple of months ago - Google helped but it wasn't quite as seamless as I'd hoped.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@DeWayfarer Okay, so I did physical backups like back when I was fifteen years old around like 2010-ish. By the time I was 25 and it was 2020, one hundred percent of my backups were cloud based on a bunch of different platforms.
Today, I have my work cloud which is uber secure requiring two factor authentication including biometrics. And, I have two personal clouds (OneDrive & Google -- sorry, not an Apple user here).
Between those three, one hundred percent of what is on my phone is backed up and remotely wipe-able.

@ArtieKat You must have an Apple phone. I recommend you upgrade to a smart phone. 🤣
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 my SD cards are not going get hacked! Ever! Good luck in anyone finding them even. 🙃
We are getting into the age where quantum computers and AI can break into any cloud storage.
Ancient school was always the best method. Backups to the backups even.

@DeWayfarer But there is a break-even point between effort expended and security achieved. And one must include in the analysis the possibility of the back-up degrading or getting damaged.
Without going into details of the security measures deployed, there is a reason why I chose OneDrive and GoogleDrive / Google Account for my personal security over other cloud platforms.
Also, they create for me a level of convenience that no physical backup can even approach.
Different strokes for different folks. It's a you do you kinda thing. :)

@sarabee1995 I use both of those too. Plus financial accounts backed up on Dropbox
ArtieKat · M
@sarabee1995 No, I wouldn't touch Apple lol. I have a dual-Sim Motorola running Android
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 I'm sorry, yet the whole reason Google in the business at all is to collect what you are storing. And why it's worth the while to break into anything.
I'm not falling for that trap. I minimize my accounts for a reason.

@ArtieKat
Dropbox!?!?! 🤦♀ (I hope you are paying for the business version ... my ex-gf could hack the free consumer version with her eyes closed.)
Dual-sim Android!! 👍👍👍 (Me too, but mine is Samsung.)
@DeWayfarer Yes. Google knows a lot about me. When I first started down the Google path, I restricted their access to my data (yes, they give you this option). But as I gained experience with them and realized that they "pay" you for access to your data by offering free services and life conveniences, then I gradually began opening up to them.
Today, they know EVERYTHING about me and in return I live an incredibly enabled digital life with automations that amaze me (and I'm of an age where I shouldn't be amazed by this stuff).
And, yes, I realize that this isn't for everyone. It works for me. But you do you. And be well! :)

@sarabee1995 I'm not paying for Dropbox but there's nothing there of any use to anybody. Like you I balance the convenience against the potential risks
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 You will pay far more in a decade. The ends never justifies the means.

@sarabee1995 you must remember that I started in 1976 on computers. I knew this would happen 2 decades ago! Partly why dropped out of computers among other personal reasons.

@sarabee1995 My predictions are based on past experiences. It would take a book on the history of the Internet to say why. And I doubt anyone would read it.
Experiences like why did Steve Jobs really visit Xerox PARC in 1979. My brother in law worked there in 1978 to 1980 BTW.
Experiences like what happened at the AVI/MPEG video conference comdex 1991. I was in that conference! In Las Vegas. BOTH formats failed miserably! You don't demonstrate a product that doesn't work unless it was sabotaged.
Experiences like why did Google buy out dejanews in 2001. This very username was through Dejanews and Hotmail (aka Gmail) both!
I have no love for Apple, Microsoft or Google (now Alphabet)
NONE OF THEM!
They are all crooks! Similar to Al Capone!
For all I care they could all shoot each other! Which technologically WILL happen!
I most certainly am not going to be in the fallout! Especially not with China in the quantum computer/AI business on top of all that.
Yeah I have a history experience with Oracle as well! Made by the Chinese! Their documentation was written in Chinese in 1991! No explanation can be found as to why Chinese only documentation was available! AI says marketing! I say bull****! You don't make a product in the USA and only have Chinese documentation unless it was made by Chinese!
Dropbox was mentioned above. Well their cloud service is associated with Oracle's cloud service. Paid or NOT paid!

If you are into security then you already know about the Tiktok, Bytedance, Oracle connection! Tiktok'a data is stored on Oracle's databases.
Things are happening that fast! I won't trust ANYTHING.
BTW I have a lite background in most databases. I was programming using Image on HP 3000 in 1985. Dbase II on Apple II e in 1986. MS Access in 1990 on a MS Server. SQL in 1998 on a freeBSD machine. That's not counting my Cobol, Perl and RPG experiences or the other countless programming languages.
I stopped cold turkey in 2001.
Why? I went figuratively insane! Not clinically though.

And if you still don't care, then my response would be that it's my post! And likely I will delete your emoji reply! Because you don't care!
It's my post! I have the ability to delete such replies for a reason.

@DeWayfarer Dude! Lol, I'm just playin'.
And a shrug is just a shrug.
What it means (irl or here) is just that I have nothing to add to your comment, nothing to object to, nothing to agree with. Simply an acknowledgement that you spoke to me, but to which I have no strong feelings.
I'm very tech centered, you are very anti-tech. Neither of us is right or wrong. You do you and I'll do me. That's about it. 🤷♀

@sarabee1995 Not quite as anti tech as you might think. Just far more cautious.
I have run a website off my cellphone! And with a SQL sever on the other end.
