Yes. I've learned that. Especially when I worked at the homeless shelter. I always assumed ALL of my co-workers were nice people. They weren't.
I lost $500 that I loaned to one of them...(it was my tax money).
I lost my favorite cookbook with handwritten recipe alterations that I loaned to a Minister's wife, and a co-worker for whom I had drawn a picture of an angel when she was hospitalized claimed that "someone had stolen it", and wanted me to draw another one. I refused, because something about the expression on her face told me she had sold it, and wanted another free picture to sell.
At that time, the DIRECTOR who was in her mid 50's took an antique rattan baby pram home from the donations shed. Her husband was an antiques dealer. When we asked her about it, she claimed that she was pregnant! 🤣🤣🤣 Her stomach was certainly the right size...but somehow that "baby" never appeared!!!

That's why I minimize dealing with strangers.
It changes you. You think being nice and respectful means you’re going to get it back. But you don’t. And then you become something else.
