They were an intentional alteration of feet bone structure done to girls in ancient china. Incredibly cruel standard of beauty imposed on women. The custom moved from the higher classes to the lower ones, and despite several emperors attempting to end it , they failed, until a century ago with the development of urban life.

I wonder which gender related customs of ours today will be looked at as ruthless by future generations.

@LordShadowfire I agree with that actually. For more than 10 years I have been telling people it should be an adult choice, and only encouraged when medically necessary. I have even discussed that several times on this website.

Studies related to it aren't done to discredit other preventive measures requiring no medical intervention. They are biased to begin with.
