How would you react?

I was simply going for a walk and this strange old man standing next to his car suddenly says something that translates to "get well soon" for no reason at all. I just glared at him and said nothing and kept going.

I don't look sick or anything, I'm pretty sure he was referring to my disability. Maybe he meant well but it was a weird moment for me and made me feel uncomfortable.

That's typical ableism. Many people wish you to get out of your wheelchair because they see a wheelchair as an issue instead of a solution. That's their problem, though I wouldn't know to respond to them making it ours.

I would feel offended, yes. People need to educate themselves. I don't care for their intentions, I am not their Allah to discuss and know and believe in intentions.

It is very dismissive and inconsiderate. Better address strangers as humans one actually cares about by finding out more about their boundaries. For some people it is fine to wish , for others it is more important to acknowledge that the world isn't perfect and not every health limitation is solvable.

I wouldn't have taken offense. I would have probably thought he was trying to be kind and he meant well. But perhaps he was dealing with a cognitive issue such as early onset Alzheimers or Parkinsons and said the wrong thing. Or maybe he simply mistook me for someone else who was sick. I am not easily offended and try to offer grace where I can... Maybe someone will do the same for me sometime, when I say or do the incorrect thing.

TBH I've sort of made this mistake before. Not just blurting it out to some random person, but like in the context of conversations where it came up. I somewhat sympathize with him, but I also sympathize with you, because yeah that must feel like shit.

No idea of how I would have t reacted if I had a disability I'd had to deal with daily, but it feels like the easiest thing to assume would be he meant to be sympathetic.
