Andrew Jackson was the only US President to completely pay off the national debt. I don’t know why, but my high school history teacher said that completely paying off the national debt was actually a bad thing. You want to keep it low, it could stand to be a heck of a lot lower than it is now, but you don’t want to [i]completely[/i] pay it off like Jackson did.
