My ex reached out on my birthday

I haven’t spoken to him in over 1 year and he basically told me happy birthday and explained why he couldn’t be with me. Why would he reach out to me on my birthday just to explain to me why he didn’t want to be with me 🙃

Can't be with you and don't want to be with you aren't the same thing. Maybe it was a weak attempt to see if you would suggest ways you could be together. Kind of a lame thing to do, IMO, but maybe they were trying to see if you're still interested.
