Do you live a simple life?

Life is still complex even when you lead a "simple" way of life.

I try but life often complicates things.

I'm not sure that (living a simple life) is even possible today... or for a great many years. I do try, but it's not always possible.

I retreat into the garden, have few friends now.

In my youth I lived in the bleak fenland of England. Its stillness was the backdrop. No INTERNET then.
