What are some (non-traumatic) things that helped you develop confidence and resilience as a kid?

My kid has been struggling with self-esteem all year in a lot of different ways. I think a lot about how to help Sam thrive in this crazy world. I just taught my Sam how to ride yesterday on a brand new bike as an early elementary school graduation present.

It was a bit of an emotional roller coaster.
Sam went from eager,
to apprehensive and unsure if they wanted the bike anymore,
then willingness to at least try,
to embarrassed as some of their friends showed up,
then filled with pride as they bolted off down the trail.

Sam is so proud. Their confidence is booming. I thought they’d quit when they took a spill, but Sam got right back on that bike to zoom off. 💜 Sam was also really excited to show John, which was touching.

I remember so many moments as a kid on my bike where I got my first taste of Independence, exploring the world on my own and with friends, all the while learning how to overcome challenges and spills.

MARTIAL ARTS!!

Karate, jiujitsu, judo and competitive sports (even if just with friends) all help to playfully introduce kids to micro doses of resilience, gradually increasing in difficulty as life progresses. While this doesn't make them immune to stress responses, these things do give people healthier outlets for their stress and energy. Not only that, but they learn what it's like to exist in community with others who are of varying ages, teaching them to respect and care for others. They learn to take a hit and defend themselves which gives them confidence. There's so many positive ways that these kinds of activities can affect us and improve upon the growth that children experience during those years of crucial development.

My parents standing by me, specially my mom. Generally speaking I was a very scared kid, so knowing she would protect me made me feel more secure as I grew up.

Learning to ride a bike is a big moment in a kid's life. 😊 For me, it was painting.
