I don't believe life is about finding meaning in suffering

That is perhaps a flawed and even dangerous mindset. Life is about overcoming the suffering for the things that hold meaning to you.

It’s tricky because in a lot of cases for people overcoming trauma and depression it has to do with finding some sort of cohesive narrative to their story about the trauma and how to move forward from that story into a new narrative. It’s a pretty common coping strategy. Ideally, the person moves forward into a healthier new narrative for their self-concept. That said, the pursuit of existential meaning is highly personal. It should never be thrust upon someone like a carrot and that should never be used to justify the suffering of others or undermine their healing process. Toughen up buttercup does not make for better people.

(finding meaning in suffering)... That sounds like gaslighters and sadistic abusers would use.
kentex35 · 100+, M
@iamelijah which is a false narrative.

For me most of my life has been suffering with moments of meaning here & there. I used to hate myself & didn't wanna be here. Now I just live for the moments. Not all are great but I have times where that doesn't matter so much

@ChiefJustWalks why did you have so much suffering in your life?
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@Jenny1234 well the answer isn't as simple as reason I can explain in a comment in all honesty

You mean with that mindset you don't resist the suffering? 🤔
Classified · M
@Miram Ah a yin yang belief. I don't like those kinds of beliefs anyway.

When suffering is solvable, then it's best to solve it.

Even if one can learn things during suffering, I don't think suffering is meant to be. And it is definitely not the only way to learn. 🤔

@Classified I love taoism. I don't think people really dig into it deeply enough to understand it and it is mostly their own culturally biased interpretations
Classified · M
@Miram Well in that sense people don't really dig into it deepy, that's true. I tend to keep far from it.

You're not joining the Buddhist bandwagon then...
Miram · 31-35, F
@OldBrit There are different types of Buddhism. Most of what people echo on the internet is bastardized versions of it.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Miram I thought the core belief is loud is suffering. That was what I was taught in the 70s
Miram · 31-35, F
@OldBrit it is one of the core beliefs but I don't think the meaning of life is suffering to Buddhism, it is likely nirvana, enlightenment.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Yeah fuck that bullshit, that sounds like siding with oppressors.
Miram · 31-35, F
What suffering, it's a test from God because they love you.
It's just too masochistic and damaging to live your whole life believing that lie. If you love someone you don't make them go through shit it's just a ridiculous concept.

There's a lot of things we can learn to enjoy instead of living in misery.

IVe never, ever heard of this
Exactly so. In spit of, I always say. Be soft… in spite of.
