Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
And I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day
Works for me and Kris Kristofferson

@dancingtongue Johnny Cash better
dancingtongue80-89, M
@Slade Yeah, but Kris wrote it for him.

@dancingtongue I know. But nobody could ooze pain like Johnny!
dancingtongue80-89, M
@Slade Which is why Kris specifically wrote it for him and when he couldn't get his attention any other way, landed his National Guard helicopter on Cash's lawn to present it to him. Then the TV censor tried to excise the "wish I was stoned" line when Cash first performed it on his TV show. Kristofferson says he had no idea what Cash was going to do until he actually sung it on the show, and when he came to the line, looked up to the balcony at Ryman Auditorium where Kristofferson was and bellowed "wish I was STONED". Became CMA Country Song of the year and, as Kris says, I was able to put down my broom and quit the day job.

@dancingtongue Very cool. What year was this?
dancingtongue80-89, M
@Slade First recorded by Ray Stevens in 1969. Cash version was CMA Song of the Year in 1970. Kristofferson moved to Nashville in 1965, resigning his commission in the Army because he wanted to fly combat in Vietnam and the Army wanted him to teach English at West Point. His father, a General, disowned him at the time. Kristofferson is noted for his protest songs, but the first of his songs to ever be recorded was a pro-Vietnam War, anti-protester song he wrote while still in the Army. He said his views of the war matured with time, like so many.

@dancingtongue Cool. Like me with that war. Although my only memory of it was a mild dread I'd have to go there as it seemed to never end
