Yes and no. I don't respect my mother rather I love her so much that I practically worship the ground she walks on. I hate to displease her. As more my father, I must respect him even though I don't like him. I have to speak formally to him and he often till this day if I try to disagree or complain "Don't talk back to me! Don't argue with me! I am NOT your mother!!" My mother runs a lot of interference between her children and their father. Usually he leaves us for our mother to deal with most the time BUT if we do something to disrespect or mistreat her then he will step in in a hurry. If she asks him to or doesn't object to him discipline us then we know we've really screwed up. It is knowing that if we're not shielded by our mother then our father can be very strict and harsh that keeps us begrudgingly respecting, speaking formally, obeying him, and treating him with distant coldness.
