I do not like when able-bodied people get things that I have to work for, for free

I try to be grateful for what I have, food, water, shelter.

I try to be grateful that I have remained employed throughout the pandemic.

But I can't help but think: I'd probably have more if I didn't work.

I.e free food- extra snap/food stamp benefits ( I do not & have not ever in life received them).

Free money ( child credit- $200-300 per child per month) just for having a child.

Unemployment and housing help.

Pretty sure these folks incomes is greater than mine, yet they don't even have to lift a finger.

Apparently I'm doing something wrong🤷‍♀️

@iamnikki where i live yes there are people who need assistance and deserve it ,there are also people that make a career out of wellfare and their kids grow up and follow in their footsteps.I went to the grocery store to get my staples raman and hot dogs. In front of me at the checkout a man and women with not one not two three carts full steak chips soda ,I'm checking my pockets to make sure i can pay while they swipe their ebt card and roll on out the door.Edit to add i didn't qualify for any stimulus checks.

@kodiac THIS is what I'm talking about. THIS right here. It's ridiculous.
Assistance should be temporary. People are probably gonna jump on this thread and say " covid benefits ARE temporary". Meanwhile, those are PROBABLY the same people that were getting benefits (free food, free housing, free money) even before covid.

@iamnikki Every fast food place in town has help wanted signs up ,but can't fill those jobs i wonder why ? I see senior citizens working there who shouldn't have to but 20 year olds won't.

@kodiac @iamnikki yes have seen the same thing…what’s even worse is that those who are filling up a shopping cart with sweets, chips, soft drinks & have maybe 3 healthy items and then paying with SNAP. I’m old enough to remember where there were protests and demonstrations by people who wanted the government to do away with the commodity program and start issuing food stamps so they could buy “healthy foods like vegetables” since some of those getting commodities needed fresh produce due to being diabetics. And in the decades since the Food Stamp Program started we have seen diabetes rates increase. When I worked at a store I’ve seen a young woman with one leg that had been amputated and the other turning black (she wore shorts in the warm months) load up her bags with soft drinks, sweets & other junk food, pay with SNAP and roll out of the store on her handicap scooter with all those bags of junk food tied to the scooter.

@cherokeepatti I get SNAP benefits. Yes I purchased some junk food items for a swimming trip to the river but I also used part of it to grow a nice fruit and vegetable garden.

@morrgin 👍
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@cherokeepatti yea I think it would be beneficial to limit the amount of junk food they can buy with EBT.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@morrgin you said some and that’s not the same as 90% or more
morrgin · F
@cherokeepatti true but I'm thinking if I see a person buying a bunch of junk food with SNAP how do I come to the conclusion that they buy that type of food all the time unless I saw them each time they go shopping at the grocery store? Someone could have seen me buying junk food with SNAP and assumed thats what I buy all the time.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@morrgin This may receive some hostility but I've noticed lower income people buy more junk. First because it's cheaper than fresh food , secondly it's always the junk places like Walmart have on promotion
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@JimboSaturn I heard one woman say that fruits & vegetables were expensive but she’d spend $12-15 for sandwiches, chips & a huge soft drink and eat like that for lunch every day till she was broke. You could buy plenty of fruits & veggies and make some sandwiches at home to bring for lunch with that kind of money.
