I think if were a catered event or renting a banquet room and I received an invite, I would make the assumption that it was being paid for.
But if it were just people getting together at a restaurant to celebrate an event for someone, then I would plan on paying for my own meal.
I guess I view it as "formal events" versus just trying to get people together. Not sure how much sense that makes, but it does to me 🤣
