What do you do to feel less anxious?

When no matter what you seem to do to keep your mind off something that's really hitting your nerves, it's still managing to grab a hold of you.

put on some relaxing music. take a walk to clear your mind. do some yoga or stretching to relax and center. call a friend and talk about it. journal about it

A long time ago I learnt a couple of valuable lessons on this.

1. If you're worried about something specific work out what is the next thing you can do about it. Can you ask someone for help? Fix it yourself? etc. or are you just waiting on something to happen that is out of your control. If there is something you can do - do that thing. Do it now and then tick it off your list. Just write that down, do it, then cross it off. If not if you are waiting on something or someone - like waiting on test results for example. Acknowledge that there is nothing you can do and try to then focus on doing something else, just hoover a room or something else.

2. If the problem is you continue to engage with thoughts about the worry. Then try to not engage. Imagine it like an annoying kid in the back of the car saying "Are we there yet?" repeatedly. If you ignore them eventually they stop but if you engage with them then you're drawn into, how much further, why is the traffic bad, can we stop here, can we go a different way etc. Try not to engage with it. Let the thought come and then go but if you engage even to try to push it away it'll have you then you'll be in a circle of engagement. It's not easy and I'm way from perfect on it but it does work if you master it.

I discovered this short vid a while back. It has certainly helped me out.

I usually just kind of live with it being there at this point. Half of the problems caused by anxiety seem to arise from an unconscious assumption that you are "not allowed" to be anxious. When I was younger, I would often just blow off an entire day and sleep if it was bad enough, which usually helped significantly.
