Why is is that trying to do the right thing makes one the bad person?

A new couple has moved in next door, the Husband always comes to my end of the building to have his cigarette then throws the butt onto the ground.
So I went out and asked him nicely to put his butts in the bin.
He looked at me askance and said,
"Why do you care"?
"Because I take pride in my surroundings and why should I allow you to litter the place up"?
"Alright, alright, I will put them in the bin from now on"
He walks away in a huff.
