I believe that is part of the reason. A new regional currency backed by hard assets would have created a problem for the Petro dollar hegemony..
Libya was actually a well run country, it's people were relatively happy with the government.
I believe that the overthrow of the country was instigated by French intelligence working with dissidents within the country.
