I believe that is part of the reason. A new regional currency backed by hard assets would have created a problem for the Petro dollar hegemony..
Libya was actually a well run country, it's people were relatively happy with the government.
I believe that the overthrow of the country was instigated by French intelligence working with dissidents within the country.

Kadafi posed no real threat to the region or the west that couldn't be managed.

His death was not justified...but potentially rendering the petro dollar entirely worthless sealed his fate and has likely indefinitely eliminated all potential for African nations to ever be self determining.
