And so did Roosevelt, Keynes, Churchill, Pauling, Helen Keller and many others. The slave trade was based on the belief in the superiority of the "white race".

But this all originated before Darwin. Of course, his ideas were twisted into so called Social Darwinism in an effort to give already established biases a hint of scientific validity. If Darwin had never developed his theory, we would still have racism.

@Bushranger Yes they were all progressives. However Socialist Hitler acted on the ideas that Darwin promulgated. In fact there was a mass slaughter of blacks in Africa by some of the most famous Nazis' fathers. They too were following Darwin's theory. Darwin was a racist and his theory helped cause one of the major death events in the 20th century. Of course it was not the only theory that went into the Nazi killing spree Nietzsche helped too. However it should be noted that Darwin's greatest acceptance was by German biologists prior to WWII. Coincidence?

@hippyjoe1955 Eugenics has a very long history, but it's modern form began in England and spread to much of Europe and America fairly quickly. It doesn't take long to find information about it online, particularly in regard to forced sterilisation in the US, Canada, etc. Yes, Hitler took it a lot further, but he wasn't the only leader of the time who wanted to rid the world of the "inferior races,"

Given that most of the people who supported eugenics in the rest of Europe and the Americas identified as Christians, the same argument you make against Darwin could be made against Christianity.
