If you go by the Christian Bible, Adam and Eve were susceptible to sin (disobeying God) and so it would have happened eventually no matter what. Bible doesn't seem to actually tell how long Adam & Eve were in paradise, being what it was, it could and probably was an eternity as far as we're concerned.
However, as others pointed out, both the serpent (Devil) and Adam & Eve were created as is by omniscient & omnipotent God, so in theology it's all part of God's plan in the first place. I don't think it makes any sense to interpret the Bible literally though; for starters, how was it possible for Adam & Eve to "hide" from God and why didn't God know even before what they'd done? Either God isn't omniscient, or He's being deceptive to entrap & mess around with Adam and Eve, orr... it's a parable about obeying God and not 'hiding' from him.
