Should people give up wearing glasses at a certain point?

Like, it would obviously be somewhat dependent on their eyesight, but assuming they had good enough vision to function without them. For example, I know several people decide to stop wearing glasses if they get braces because they don't like the look of both together. Also, many students quit wearing glasses when they're done with school since they won't need to read as much or when starting a new level of school (college, high school, etc.) due to either bullying/wanting to change their image, health issues like headaches, or maybe other reasons. A lot of people wear contacts too, but some can't and others don't really need to. Just wondering about everyone's thoughts on this.

Perhaps I should.

@Fauxmyope2 Thank you choosing my answer as the “Best Answer” .

You're welcome. What reasons do you have for wanting to stop wearing your glasses? And are you really going to do that? Also, if so, by using contacts or surgery or just quitting using vision correction altogether?
Fauxmyope2 · 26-30, F
@matttheman13 Definitely not contacts or surgery.
matttheman13 · 31-35, M
@Fauxmyope2 Well, it's definitely admirable to just stop wearing them without any of that kind of help since you'd be overcoming a challenge, kind of like getting off of crutches or out of a wheelchair. How is your vision without glasses; have you tried that much before?
Fauxmyope2 · 26-30, F
@matttheman13 I haven’t stopped wearing my glasses yet. You have me pondering their removal though.
matttheman13 · 31-35, M
But why specifically? I tried to list as many common general reasons as I could when I started this thread but I doubt all of them apply to you. Also, do you think it would be practical to do that? I would certainly encourage it if your eyesight is or can get good enough.

@matttheman13 Persuade me

Hmm... maybe post some selfies without glasses and see how many compliments you get? Or think of how much easier it would be to just not worry about them... no eye doctor appointments or broken glasses or them blocking peripheral vision/getting weird reflections or people thinking you're blind/making unwanted comments about them or tons of other associated problems? How about just the money you'd save from not getting new prescriptions all the time?

@matttheman13 What is your vision without your glasses? It can’t be too good if your license is restricted.
matttheman13 · 31-35, M
It's actually decent, at least in my right eye. Didn't you see I said I never even tried the test without glasses; I think I could probably pass it, at least the main part. Sometimes I fail the peripheral vision part but that's because I have a lazy eye (my left one) and the test isn't really designed for that... it's basically just testing if I can see to the side right in front of my face which is going to be way too late in any real situations on the road. Anyway, my right eye is almost 20/20 without glasses; my left is much worse but I think it's still 20/40 or better. I'm farsighted, but I can read most things without glasses unless they're in really small print. How is your vision? I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that you're nearsighted based on your username, and you also said you don't have a license restriction so it must not be too bad, but is there anything else? Do you ever go without your glasses now like for reading or maybe some stuff at home or at work, etc.?
Fauxmyope2 · 26-30, F
@matttheman13 Why is your license restricted then? You should be able to pass the DMV test without your glasses.

Yes, I wear my glasses for distance and was able to EASILY pass the DMV test without my glasses. I take my glasses off to read usually. Otherwise, I wear them all of the time. I have worn glasses for 25 months now.
matttheman13 · 31-35, M
Lol; I told you twice; I never tried the test without them! I just wore them the first time because it was before I really started going without them much and my dad was in a rush anyway. And now I just wear them because if I didn't they'd just ask if I had contacts and a bunch of other questions and I'd get nervous or anxious or whatever plus it'd just take longer. Also, I didn't realize you had just gotten glasses that recently. What made you get them?
Fauxmyope2 · 26-30, F
@matttheman13 I actually always wanted to wear glasses. I made an appointment and I got glasses. I don’t need to wear them as much as I do.

So...you have a restricted license even though you can pass the vision test?
matttheman13 · 31-35, M
So you still like wearing glasses now? Maybe not as much though, since you seem to be debating it? Maybe with more time you'll go the opposite way and start to dislike them. Was there a reason why you wanted to wear them though? Like did someone you looked up to have them? Or you thought they looked cool? Or you wanted to see if you could have super good eyesight?
Fauxmyope2 · 26-30, F
@matttheman13 I do but I am waffling. Yes, pat yourself on the back about that. I did envy a few of my friends who wore glasses. I liked wearing theirs and how I looked.

My prescription is extremely weak and my visual acuity is pretty darn good without them.
matttheman13 · 31-35, M
Well, I think you might actually worsen your vision a bit (temporarily) if you continue to wear your glasses when you don't really need them. I know doctors say that's not possible, but they're talking about permanently. I mean more like you'd become so dependent on glasses that eventually when you try to go without them, it'll take longer and longer to get used to, especially if you start getting stronger prescriptions. I don't know if you'd want that though; some people like the idea of being helpless without glasses or enjoy the look of soft focus/fuzzy blur they get from myopia while others want to make sure they're able to function with or without glasses.
Fauxmyope2 · 26-30, F
@matttheman13 I would never care to be helpless in any way regarding my eyesight or anything else. I definitely would prefer to be able to function with and without my glasses.
matttheman13 · 31-35, M
I think you should at least practice going without them sometimes then, more than just for reading.
Fauxmyope2 · 26-30, F
I was tempted to do just that when I awoke this morning. Habit got the better of me.
matttheman13 · 31-35, M
You just need to get into the new habit of going without your glasses instead; you'll get there eventually.
