A combination of hormones, stress levels, behavioural tendencies, and typical recreational/vocational activities.
From an evolutionary standpoint the male of a species is able to spread its genes more profusely in a shorter lifespan than the female so longevity isn't as much a necessity or advantage for the male's genetic profusion as the female's. So there is trade of being more competitive and back breaking behaviour at the detriment of likely longevity. For example we know testosterone taxes the endocrine and vascular systems but there is trade off in the genetic sense that the male can impregnate more females thruogh the enhanced competitiveness and risk taking that the hormone typically produces since time is mush less a factor. A female has more time constraints on its ability to procreate. While having the male of a species having the same typical lifespans actually would lead to less genetic diversity of population.
