What happens when you are defined as unstable?

The new law in Florida makes me out to be a risk. The law allows them to seize guns and ammo from people who are considered to be a threat. The first person who was victimized was an Army veteran. I went and read the law. I don't feel like I should have to turn in my guns but it's like the law was written to take my guns away specifically. Maybe I need to get rid of my guns? I hate the idea of yielding my control of my life and the guns make me feel like I have some control. I am a veteran. I am a combat veteran. Maybe I am unstable.

How did they determine you are unstable?

@Doomflower suicidality alone is enough. I have struggled with suicidal thoughts my whole life. They also make specific recommendations for seizure for people who are "mentally ill" or suffer from "mental illness" - the law is written broadly to afford the police wide latitude. The potential for abuse by the authorities is worrisome.

@Genieinabottle well it is true that in the USA most successful suicides are carried out with firearms and the people most likely to complete suicide are men. Especially men who have been through violent and traumatic experiences. Especially when they have weapons training. So yeah you probably shouldn't keep guns in your household if you want to reduce your chance of blowing your own brains out.

I am far more concerned about the way existing laws are abused to get around waiting periods and background checks. I am more worried that 3D printed guns will make your problem obsolete.

@Doomflower taking guns away doesn't stop suicide. The rates are comparable in Europe Russia and Japan all of which have rigorous gun laws.

@Genieinabottle it's notoriously difficult to track suicide rates due to stigma which tends to get a lot of suicides labeled accidental.

So you think taking guns away makes it harder to kill yourself? Really?

We could do a whole thread on ways to kill yourself other than firearms, not to mention bows have arrows with shotgun shell tips
