A dad saying "Our relationship is a work in progress." About his 7 yr old son?

and why he would say such a thing to a 7 yr old
I am all about making my son know the value of things he gets
Doing little things to earn things he wants so he gets nothing is free
Respect and manners ,to listen to those I allow to be in charge of him
But no I could not ever see me saying anything like that to my son
I have walked away when he had me angry ,so I was not about to punish him while I was mad (which is very rare ) ,we always talk over why he is in trouble and he agrees his punishment fits whatever he's done ,before he is punished so he knows its killing Dad to punish my little man ,but he needs a reminder so maybe he wont repeat what it is he has done .to know some times things we do have consequences,
Adults have rules too .
So I have said "right now it may seem you won this one " Dads taking a time out .
But I assure you it only seems that way ,,we will be talking this over when Dad calms down (and my Ex said WTH ,why would you say that

That one gets me ,I would want to know why he said it to a little boy
