The primary cause of unhappiness...

Is never the situation itself...but perhaps your thoughts about it?
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
I think expecting somebody else to be responsible for your happiness is often the problem.
If folk spent more time trying to make themselves happy, if somebody else walks into your life.....bonus !
Pambi · 26-30, F
@Picklebobble2 Excellent point... Or if not someone, then "sometime". We base what we expect on learned behavior from the past... Hoping tomorrow will provide a better day. No past.. No future. What we have is right now.
Fernie · F
@Picklebobble2 well said PB! "there is no way to happiness...happiness IS the way"

I'm pretty sure I would be happier if the situation had not come about. Although I am seeing more of your point, that would mean if I don't think about my situation, therefore it would not cause me unhappiness. Yet would that not be simply putting things out of mind and not dealing with the problem itself?
Fernie · F
@Pambi I must disagree with that Pambi...a thought...any thought can be changed. Most of us don't know that until we know it. With some practice...we all have the ability to replace bad thoughts with good ones. That "thinker" can be stopped
Pambi · 26-30, F
@Fernie Certainly...motivation.... Incentive... Self need all influence the thinker in your head.

But thinking in and of itself is automatic and repetitive.

To say "I think"...is like saying "I digest my food"..."I circulate my blood".

It just happens.

The awareness that you remain offers its too cents.
Fernie · F
@Pambi IT is AUTOMATIC AND REPETITIVE...THAT IS WHY SO MAY FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO MEDITATE...BUT ONCE THEY LEARN TO IMMEDIATELY PUSH THE THOUGHT AWAY AND BRING THEIR AWARENESS BACK TO THE MEDITATION...THEREIN LIES THE PRACTICE...THOSE THOUGHTS NEVER STAY...WE REPLACE THEM IMMEDIATELY....oops...caps...too pooped to redo...not yelling!

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes (author unknown): Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you deal with it
Tragic and unfortunate events will inevitably happen. Perception and lingering thoughts of them will always prolong and sometimes create unhappiness.

Happiness and contentment is 10% external and 90% internal. Numbers subject to debate and circumstance.

idk maybe I'm ungrateful, maybe my circumstances and time has made me what I am
Pambi · 26-30, F
@SW-User "maybe I'm this"..."maybe this happened in the past "

The past has no power over you today. It's an illusion. A memory. We make who we "are" right now. This very moment is all we have.
SW-User
@Pambi It's easy to say it but our past is what made us and our present is where we're stuck

whisper the secret to my dead will so I could continue rolling forward
Pambi · 26-30, F
@SW-User Consider the concept of "right now".

What ever you believe "made you"...happened right now, back then.

What ever will take place in the future.. Will happen... Right now, when it does.

It'll be Right Now.

Stay I'm the moment...and your dead will find peace.

I have learned that happiness is a choice...so is misery

Pambi · 26-30, F

@Pambi hot damn!!!! Yay!!
jackson55 · M
Some people just enjoy being unhappy so they can complain about it.
@jackson55 do they ever. This site is a great example of that.
Fernie · F
@jackson55 I agree. Sometimes for some people...it becomes a daily habit...a comfort zone
Sometimes it IS the situation itself.
Pambi · 26-30, F
@bijouxbroussard The situation...

Happened.

It caused nothing.

It has no intent.

Your... Our... Thoughts make it so.
@Pambi Well, you don't know the situation. Why or intent is irrelevant. It caused me to be a widow and childless. I don't know anyone else who could've taken that and chosen to see it as a positive thing. And yes, I've had decades to make some kind of peace with that situation. But yes, it was the situation itself.
Pambi · 26-30, F
@bijouxbroussard I have faith that you will find peace someday.

Situations...no matter how horrible, create space in our lives.

How we choose to fill them then becomes a situation WE can control.

I too have experienced great loss and I speak not from mere words... But from my heart.
