greenknight According to SW you were born not earlier than 1973 so I'm not surprised that you didn't hear of it in the 70s. I'm even less surprised that you didn't notice it in the 60s!
Most people who felt as though they didn't fit were unable to talk about it, there were no, or at least very few, visible support organizations. It wasn't until 1967 that sex between men 21 and older was decriminalised in England and Wales. In Scotland this didn't happen until 1980 and in Northern Ireland 1982. So you can imagine that coming out as transgender would be even more difficult for most of us.
